Stick To Your Story
I recently started watching this TV show that I thought was really cool, and, as an added bonus, it had a character who was not only gay, but also similar to me in ideas. He wasn’t flamboyantly gay, but he wasn’t the big, muscled jock, either. He was a quiet, fairly smart, clearly nerdy kid who was also gay, but then, of course, they had to ruin it.
Bam-oh, out of nowhere, he starts dating this girl. Now, I get that a lot of kids are confused when they’re teenagers, and many will bounce between girls and guys a few times before they figure out what they actually want, and maybe this wouldn’t bother me so much if there were more shows with plain old, nondescript gay characters to choose from, but come on. I mean, I’ve watched three shows where a gay character suddenly decides he or she likes the opposite sex as well or instead of.
And, to be fair, I get ticked off when they make straight characters suddenly gay, too. Some characters I can see as “struggling with” their sexuality or trying to hide it, but, let’s face it, some characters are just straight, and maybe they should stay that way.
I’ll admit, I’ve indulged in slash and the like fan-fictions where characters who I know are straight make drastic turn-arounds into gay-dome, but I wouldn’t have to stoop to that if they would just make a more reasonable amount of characters gay. Haven’t you ever seen a TV show and said, “O.K, I know that character is supposed to be gay. They were just too scared to make him/her that way.” I can even think of a show where the writers admitted to it.
Basically, I’m just a stickler for consistent characterization. I want my straights straights, my bis bi, and my gays gay. If you want a character to be sexually confused, make them confused. Don’t make them comfortable in their sexuality and then flip them around to go the other way. If all my straight cheerleaders suddenly decide they’d rather program computers and sleep with girls and all my gay math-nerds run off to start straight sports clubs, I don’t know what I’ll do.
