Constipated granny

So my wife’s great, great granny is staying with us a few days. Lovely old bird. Except she’s viciously constipated and finds it necessary to keep this fact from her surrounding family until IT’S TOO LATE. Now cut to leaking bowels, bleeding hemorrhoids and a mess on the floor. Rinse + repeat over and over and over multiple times through multiple trips to the bathroom WITHOUT WASHING HER FUCKING HANDS.

My god. Please, elderly folks – just swallow your fucking pride, and retain your dignity. Go to an assisted-living program. Live out your days in comfort with the help you need. Don’t fucking put your family out because you can’t hack being NINETY SEVEN YEARS OLD. Jesus Christ on a stick – just accept it already! YOU’RE OLD! IT HAPPENS! STOP BLEEDING SHIT ON MY FUCKING FLOOR! WASH YOUR HAAAAANDS!!!

OK. Now she’s been wiping her ass and throwing the soiled tissue in the garbage. Wonderful. They’re shipping her to the hospital now. She’s getting a much needed colon flushing. Then she’s going home.

It just pisses me off, because by allowing her to get this way, her immediate family is depriving her of dignity in her “golden years”. She needs to take daily medication to avoid these problems, but she forgets. BECAUSE SHE LIVES ON HER OWN! But when we try to get her into a nursing home, she refuses and all of a sudden we have to take her feelings into consideration. Meanwhile, she shits herself during family gatherings.

So what’s more important: making granny swallow her pride and live in proper care, or fading away into extreme senility without any dignity?

I sound harsh, and I feel bad after writing this. But you know what? Venting like this makes me resent her less, since I’ve actually spoken my mind. So – thank you, internets.

How about a live-in nurse or home health aide? There are services that will come by and do cooking and house keeping, make sure that Gran is taking her meds, etc. It might be cheaper for a year or two rather than putting her in a home.

Have you ever been to one of those places? Even the mid range ones can be bloody awful.

As for your venting, I just blew off steam about my folks earlier tonight. The venting helps, even if it’s just to the internets :-)

It sounds like she suffers from some type of colon disease or even rectal cancer. You know what is the strange thing? Is that these type of diseases are not only for the elderly anymore and they can even happen to young kids and adults. I know someone who is very young and who lives with this disease. I know how you feel, because “although he washes his hands”; I can tell that when he looks at me, he can see it in my eyes… The pity and sometimes even disgust and NOT the compassion or empathy that he needs or deserves.

But I guess the empathy will come when we will all get there…right?

PS. There is always hand sanitizer for granny’s hands and also keep one handy for yourself ( you know so you can wipe everything before you touch it.) Hope things get better.
