I should be taken out and shot.

I just found out that I accidentally overcharged a sweet little old lady last week. I pressed an extra ’0′ when I was putting her purchase through the computer. I charged her $1000 instead of $100. God knows why I haven’t been fired and my boss didn’t even seem angry about it, but wow do I hate myself. I practically stole $900 from that poor woman. I should be taken out and shot. I keep telling myself that they’re bound to notice it on their bill sooner or later and come back, so at least they’ll get their money back and maybe I’ll even get a chance to apologise… I feel awful about it.

Why can’t the bill be corrected before it gets sent out? It sucks that the mistake happened, but isn’t there any way to resolve it before requiring them to complain about the bill amount?

Apparently not. I left before we did the till that day and didn’t work until almost a week later, so it was my boss who discovered the mistake. She was saying that since we don’t keep any records we can’t get in touch with them to refund it unless they come back in. I really, really wish there was a way to make sure that it’s fixed and she gets her money back.

your company doesn’t keep records of sales? they don’t have sales receipts with credit card numbers on them? and the person that did the till that night didn’t see a 900$ difference on the final sales receipt? it wasn’t “discovered” for over a week? and your boss isn’t that mad?
maybe it’s just me, but something seems fishy about all of that. with a 1000$ credit card charge on the books for the night, it would be really easy to walk off with 900 bucks cash and have the till balance for the night.

I don’t know – I would have thought we had the number on the receipt as well, but apparently that’s not enough. It was discovered that night and it has been discussed with my boss’s boss, but I was away for the week and didn’t find out until yesterday. I’m sure there’s nothing fishy going on (I work for a charity which also runs a small shop, and they’re lovely people). I just screwed up :(

I took in a big box of chocolates and a card today and left them there for the lady if/when she comes back in, anyway. I hope she does, and she’s bound to notice $900 missing soon, right?
