Nice Guy Finishes Next-to-Last

You call that improvement?! If I had a nickel for every time someone shot me another empty euphemism about positive thinking, I wouldn’t need to work anyway. Let’s face it: spouting watered-down, bogus comments of encouragement that are too general to apply is just a new social norm for politely declining to hear about someone’s issue. Bosses will promote the people that make a positive impression – that’s true – but the window of opportunity each employee has to do this is so small that brown-nosing and being “chipper” and a “yes-man” are the quickest, surest ways to make sure they stand out in the boss’ limited memory space. I have seen performance, ability and education passed over again and again over the years in favor of slackers and BS-ers who’s only claim to fame is their knack for brandishing a few darling phrases whenever they can seize the spotlight. It’s all they need to gain them instant recognition and they know it. It would be great to kick back and muse about karma and the power of positive thinking and all the other vague, thin pieces of advice people seem to always offer, but if I don’t look for a solution to get ahead in my career for all the work, training and education I’ve completed, my creditors will!
